DIRECT STRIP PRODUCTION COMPLEX
When Algoma Steel Inc. elected to enter the market for light gauge and exposed automotive grade hot rolled strip, a decision was taken to incorporate a new caster and new hot strip mill into their integrated steel plant. Algoma selected Danieli’s novel “Flexible Thin Slab Casting” technology, utilizing automated liquid core reduction, combined with the direct rolling of hot strip. Hatch was retained to work closely with Danieli to provide engineering, project and construction management services for the project.
A two million tpy, state-of-the-art, Direct Strip Production Complex is the result, which encompasses:
- 2-strand Thin Slab Caster, producing 70 mm x 1600 mm slabs
- Two parallel tunnel furnaces, with two shuttle sections
- Single-pass Roughing Mill
- Heated transfer table
- 6-stand Finishing Mill, capable of producing gauges down to 1.0 mm
- Laminar cooling table and two downcoilers
Scope of Services:
- Engineering design
- Procurement
- Construction management
- Project management services
Project Highlights:
- First application of thin slab/direct rolling technology in Canada
- Brownfield plant constructed as extension to existing steelmaking facility, without interruption of operations
- 185,000 lpm Water Treatment Plant constructed to Hatch process design, including automation system
- Fast-track project - construction started within 1 month of contract agreement, total 25 month program
- Integrated site management team of Hatch/Algoma/Danieli personnel for construction and commissioning
